چکیده

This paper describes the work carried out to develop EcoBotIII, which is a robot with an artificial digestion system. The robot is powered by Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) and it is designed to collect food and water from the environment, digest the collected food and at the end of the digestion cycle, egest the waste. EcoBot-III operated successfully for 7 days when fed with anaerobic or pasteurized sludge, before mechanical failure required human intervention. Work is ongoing to improve the mechanics and thus extend the artificial agent’s operational lifetime.

Energetically Autonomous Robots

EcoBot I is a robot developed in the IAS Lab that uses Microbial Fuel Cells (MFC) as the ‘live engine’ and glucose as the fuel. This prototype robot employs no other form of conventional power supply and it proves the concept of autonomy whilst at the same time performing photo-taxis. Recent experiments conducted in our lab, employing two different techniques, have suggested that the power outp...

Artificial symbiosis: Towards a robot-microbe partnership

The development of the robot EcoBot II, which exhibits some partial form of energetic autonomy, is reported. Microbial Fuel Cells were used as the onboard self-sustaining power supply, which incorporated bacterial cultures from sewage sludge and employed oxygen from free air for oxidation in the cathode. This robot was able to perform phototaxis, temperature sensing and wireless transmission of...

EcoBot II: An environment monitoring autonomous robot

The ability of robots to operate with minimum human intervention, independent of the energy supply, is often enough to term an agent autonomous. However, there is a clear distinction between computational ability and energy obtainment. These have already been identified as computational autonomy and energetic autonomy [1]. Battery-operated robots, for example, demonstrate computational autonomy...

Optimal Trajectory Generation for Energy Consumption Minimization and Moving Obstacle Avoidance of SURENA III Robot’s Arm

In this paper, trajectory generation for the 4 DOF arm of SURENA III humanoid robot with the purpose of optimizing energy and avoiding a moving obstacle is presented. For this purpose, first, kinematic equations for a seven DOF manipulator are derived. Then, using the Lagrange method, an explicit dynamics model for the arm is developed. In the next step, in order to generate the desired traject...
